Since Thomas Edison’s 1876 carbon microphone, several kinds of microphones has emerged for practical, technological and mechanical use. From the liquid microphones that made unintelligible speech in early microphones intelligible, to condenser microphones devised for laboratory and studio recording purposes, to piezo microphones invented to amplify sound from acoustic musical instruments, to laser microphones developed for spying devices. We also have current microphone inventions such as the digital microphone, microphone chip or silicon microphone. Even speakers are sometimes used as microphones in practical use, such as in intercoms or walkie-talkies. Nowadays, we have microphones used for hands-free operation, like lavalier microphones, which can be worn on the body either around the neck or a clip fastened to clothing.
