November, 2006:

Christmas and Karaoke

No holiday could ever replace Christmas in the heart of many.

For families, it is a time to gather, regardless how far you may need to travel. The son brings his wife and kids home to nanay and tatay, though they needed to travel far a day before to avoid the rush. The daughter has called from abroad around noontime to great her parents, brother, nephews, nieces and sister-in-law a Merry Christmas. She could no longer wait for midnight to dial his father’s mobile number, lest she suffers network congestion. Unfortunately, there is no landline at home. It would matter to nanay and tatay to know that she’s fine, that although she misses them all especially that it’s Christmas, she is alright and would celebrate Christmas with friends. It would be half-true of course because inside she’s aching to be home.

While nanay and the daughter-in-law prepare food for Noche Buena, tatay sets to prepare the videoke using the magic mic his son gifted him last Christmas. The son knows his father by heart. When he was younger, his tatay and his titos would occasionally gather over a bottle of brandy and take turns in singing to the top of their lungs a la Matt Monroe, Tom Jones, Victor Wood and the all-time favorite Frank Sinatra.

Tonight, the competition for the top score is between father and son. Or so, they thought. Because after dinnertime at around 7PM, the titos have come to join the aspiring videoke kings. Tugged along were cousins, and aunties.

“So, this is Christmas,” says a good Christmas song. The cheers, the varieties of songs, the laughs – the fun. Indeed, this is Christmas. And rightfully before the father and the son are left alone a number of Christmas songs have already been sung. One voice above the others from he who holds the mic and the rest join in chorus. It doesn’t matter how bad it may sound, how defeated the well-recorded background is with wrong timing, wrong tone and wrong pronunciation. Tonight, people actually enjoy.

Abroad, the daughter and her Filipino friends share a simple feast. And a little later they join their families in the Philippines in the one passion that binds all – the videoke.

Videoke is everywhere just like Christmas.

A Celebration of the Holidays

Years before, we celebrate holiday seasons in a grand way. There were beautiful decorations, sparkling lights, festive foods and pretty dresses. Children are visiting form house to house to greet their relatives. It was also the event of the year where family members are reunited. Christmas and New Year, indeed, are the most awaited time of the year.

What signals this favorite time of year? For me, it is the breeze of the air and the music that can be heard everywhere. Filipino culture dictates how Filipino people are musically inclined. From folk song to natural instruments, form instrumentals to hard metals, from solo to choir competition… all of these only show how we love music and how music loves us. Not to mention the entrance of Karaoke singing trend. I remember my favorite Karaoke song which goes… “Looking through some old photographs, faces and friends we’ll always remember; watching busy shoppers rushing about, in the cool breeze of December…” Surely, Christmas will be a very happy celebration to remember.

But as time goes by, the celebration became less and less grand. Decorations are simpler, lights are less, foods are less extravagant and clothes are less expensive. I noticed that as one grows up, the less value he or she will give to these seasons and their true meaning. The essence of Christmas is diverted to the gifts people are about to receive and the New Year focuses more on the quality of celebration prepared by a household.

But I realized that Christmas and New Year are just the celebration of what we truly receive form God: that the true meaning of it is Christ Jesus whom the Father have sent us to reveal His unconditional love for us and a beautiful promise of tomorrow.

I am now contented with the simple way my family celebrate this season. In the crises that the world is encountering right now, peace and love will be the greatest gift I can give. I can start sharing this gift within my family. What is more important is that my family is complete and shares the same happiness I received form above. I’ll break the bonds of hatred within me and start a new life as the wonderful promise of God is brought by the year ahead.

Let us welcome Christ in our hearts and live Christmas and New Year not just in this season of the year but every day of our lives.

Pacman

There’s an outbreak hitting Philippine shores and beyond national borders. If you’re Pinoy and you are not infected by this fever, then you’re definitely missing out on the epidemic everyone is caught having.

The culprit? Manny Pacquiao no other!

During the height of the fist battle, the nation experienced symptoms including raised temperatures, rapid pulses, restlessness, vocal strains due to loud cheering, and increased muscle tensions because of the frequent high arm-raising alongside recurrent exhilarated leaping. The fever, in a wider scale, caused loosened traffic jams, reduced surplus of mallrats in shopping buildings, and ceased operations of several establishments. Crooks and cops took a break, and roads were literally swiped clean at the time of the bout. People were either in homes glued to their TV sets or were found swarming in movie houses, gymnasiums, sports venues, or in any place broadcasting the fight—be it all access live coverage or local telecast.

The epidemic will remain widespread. It will further invade the infecteds’ senses, moving outside of the ring into vast regions, media especially. News will feed you with the littlest updates, prints will spurt with Pacman articles. You will be hearing Manny’s songs constantly played in the airwaves, and Pacquiao’s idol appearance will further frequent advertisements, adding up to the list including a wireless telecommunications company, a fast food chain, pain reliever, herbal supplement, condiment, socks, dairy milk, ice cream, beer and the famous karaoke microphone.

But beyond the whole Pacman hype, more than the title belt and the frenzied celebration, Manny Pacquiao indeed made us Filipinos proud. He gave his countrymen something to unite about. Rival politicians, opposition and pro-administration officials have a reason to nod in agreement. A sense of pride stirs the spirits of Filipinos all over the world. Pacman’s raging fists, along with the rest of Filipino geniuses, are placing the Philippines permanently in the map. It only shows that Pinoys are an exceptional bunch, a breed with world-class caliber.

Call him a hero, whose sense of nationalistic pride evidently resonates. As what Pacman always say, he doesn’t fight for money nor for his personal fame, but for the nation’s fame. We just couldn’t deny it, as we see our prized fighter getting teary-eyed while hearing his national anthem being sung before the fight. He who wouldn’t mind sitting down a couple of hours in a cramped suite just to sign autographs for his fans and fellowmen, even if he hasn’t gotten a decent rest. He who never forgets to thank his countrymen and give his glory to God in every interview he encounter.

Manny Pacquiao is more than a boxer, he is an advocate for love of country. Let us be more than fans then. Let this sense of national loyalty operate not just in the heat of the epidemic while everyone is in euphoric festivity, but allow it to become a benign condition in our hearts. We are Filipinos. Be proud you are one.

Living the Pacman Way

How to spend  more than $6,ooo in just one day for shopping? Maybe, you should be Manny Pacquiao. After the rigorous training he experienced for the past few moths, Manny Pacquiao has once again brought home the bacon and has placed the Philippines again in the pedestal as every Filipino is expecting. Last Sunday, November 19, 2006, every street is empty of people and of vehicles, every retail store in the Philippine island is concentrated by people of all walks of life, every television set on each household has tuned on the much awaited fight, every employee in the business has find any excuse just to take a glimpse on this phenomenal cockpit. And to know that the opponent has been knocked out just for the third round is really something to be proud of for the Filipinos. Surprisingly, even the foreigners shout the name PACMAN and cheer up for the Filipinos, the world has been a living witness for that. Though most of them have cheered because of their bet, it can never be denied that it was pride for Filipino clan. And after that fight, the money prize is oozing once again for Pacman. All endorsements from sports wear, food industry, condiments, foot wear, alcoholic beverages, videoke products, analgesics and many many more, he will surely can not go back again to the poverty he experienced. He got every thing right now… a new baby, a fresh name to be  remembered by history, numerous endorsements not any of those costs below PhP 10M, a branch of convenient stores, premiere cars, rental houses and a  newly-built mansion worth PhP 35M. What else can he asked for? That is big money, a happy family and a name adored by everyone. And to spend $ 6,000 + for shopping in just one day is just nothing. How I wish I can live as Pacman. Well, he deserves all these wealth and fame.

Just a trivia. Does anyone know that Manny Pacquiao was supposed to be a priest when he was younger? In fact, he had already tered the seminary. To enter the priesthood is his mother’s dream for his son. But this man had found his passion not only to be a warrior of religion but also to be a warrior of his nation. Imagine the transition? From a priest-to-be to the world’s great boxing champion. He’s no other than, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. Bravo Manny… Bravo Filipinos!

The Advent of the Karaoke

The advent of the Karaoke is really phenomenal. Do you want to know why? The reason behind it is very simple yet logical. We do not have to memorize any lyrics! That is a relief, isn’t it? Gone were the days that you have to memorize the lyrics. Admit it, if you are like me who loves singing, you just have to know the lyrics of the newest song to hit the airway. We used to buy tons of song hits just to know the lyrics of a song.

But Karaoke change all that. Now, the lyrics are being played too while singing. And to some extent it guides the singer on the singing properly. It highlights the lyrics too. That is good if you are mastering new songs and if you are a new singer, it gives confidence to you too.

My friends and I have tons of fun inside KTV bars. It is nice to go to those places. You can sing and dance minus the embarrassment of doing it in front. Fun!!! Fun!!! Real fun I tell you and I miss that really. We do that every now and then, to release the unnecessary stress from work. We sing and dance inside KTV bars like we never did before. How I miss those times. I miss home too because there we have our own Karaoke there waiting twenty four hours a day, seven days a week where I can have precious moments with my loved ones.

And now to be honest, I am discovering the fun of doing Karaoke online. I am addicted to it to be honest. And I am singing while writing this. It allows me to choose many songs from various collections. R&B, pop, love songs, oldies; you name it they have it. You can sing while working in your personal computer. And if you are a music lover like me, you must try it.

Ingenious Invention

I used to work at a health center, once my co-workers and I were joking about all the patients outside waiting in line for so long hours that they become irritable and in turn become ill-tempered to us. We already have a television set at the lobby but that does not keep neither the patients nor their companions entertained and away from boredom. So we had a clever idea–we thought that we could install a videoke microphone outside so they will not mind waiting all morning for their turn.Of course, our idea is both outrageous and incredible, not to mention kind of impossible. It isn’t right to put up a karaoke in a health center, right? But this is only a result of the observation that Asians enjoy singing so much, no matter when or where they are. Normally videokes are present in birthday parties, festivals and other affairs. But since the introduction of the videoke microphones in the market, even along the streets, even at simplest of days, singing-along has become a definite pastime!

As ingenious as our idea to put up videoke in our facility, is the Magic Sing: the sing-along microphone that is both sleek and elegant at the outside and equipped with fine technology in the inside that results into brilliant performance. It’s one of the most popular brand in the market today, but it proves to be as competent as them.

Sing karaoke and transform your dull, monotonous gatherings into sparkling and spontaneous parties your friends and colleagues will truly enjoy! Paired with lots of food, drinks and people in high spirits, karaoke will prove to be one of the most ingenious inventions of our time! Too bad a heath facility and a videoke is not a good combo. =)

Expressive Singing

A widowed woman used to composed song about how broken hearted she is. A young man composed song about the sudden tragic death of his wife. A young international artist used to compose song about her liberation to life. These are just a few to mention about how singing impacts one’s life by way of expressing one’s self through music. To sing is to express one’s self.Ergo, it goes that a song is a reflection of one’s life normally is that of the composer and the singer artist. Studies showed that more than half of the artist from around the world very well fits to the song they sing like that of world renowned artist Britney Spears in her album sang “I’m a slave for you…” that line depicts liberation and simultaneously after a few months she indeed became pregnant before getting married as well as posing for all time favorite for men magazine playboy, liberation to life it is.
There are a lot of expressions that a song brings be it to stop discrimination as what Michael Jackson sang “Black or White”, to promote world peach as the song goes “people dying if we care enough for the living” still by Michael Jackson, like the sexually explicit song of “Limpbizkit”, and hatred that “Eminem” express “I’m sorry mama, I didn’t meant to hurt you” in his song.

When a song is being sang it is so powerful that it becomes a tool to promote whatever you want to be heard to the world through the power of expressive lyrics. You go to church, people hear song of praises, then they go on to live life righteously. You go on to rock and roll parties, they hear rock song about sexual explicit contents, people drink and after a while end up in bed. You go on to bed, listen to relaxing music, you unwind and have a good sleep. These are the powers of singing expressively.

Magic Sing ED-11000

Looking through shops for the perfect gift is rare in my experience. I’ve been through dozens of magazine catalogues and online shops to purchase something that would be perfect for a loved one. One day, I was browsing through the internet and I happen to gaze upon the new Enter Tech Magic Sing ED-11000. I was skeptical at first; it was too good to be true. It had too many features, too many songs? I said to myself, “Why not?”

So I bought one for my own, thinking I’d just probably give it away. But it was too tempting not to. So I used it, and I was amazed. The songs seemed endless, approximately about 2058 built-in songs! The microphone itself was so handy since it is wireless, there’s no hassle in carrying it around. You can also charge it thru the microphone or on the mic stand, very versatile. The old one I had had only 4 song chip slots but this new one had 10! I couldn’t believe it! It also has a USB streaming tool so it was easy for me to upload my play list in my computer.  It also has a built-in memory to record my singing and play it back for up to 8 minutes. The picture and sound quality improved a lot, much more crisp and pristine than the old ones. And the part that I was really into was that I can transmit my singing using the FM transmitting function to my own FM radio station! That I think was very innovative. There are also three different levels of real time scoring. There’s the amateur, professional and star singer, so you’ll know which one fits you best. The reservation of songs can be up to 20, which is not bad if you are eager to sing songs in a row.

For the avid fans of this, there are additional functions which I’m sure you are going to enjoy: The voice changer if you want to sound like a manly Luciano Pavarotti or a more female tone like Prince. There are 4 changing lyric colors that can indicate your performance. When it turns Green, you’re either too fast or too slow with catching up with the lyrics, Blue when you pitch is too low, Red when it’s too high, and Black when it’s just right. I love to sing but I still need a little help to guide me if I’m on the right singing track, and I think this function is really helpful. When you buy an Enter Tech Magic Sing ED-11000, you’ll get the main microphone, the song book for the endless singing of 2058 built-in songs, the dual microphone charging base stand, RCA cable, USB cable, and AC adapter. It’s a bargain!

As for my rating for the Enter Tech Magic Sing ED-11000, I give it four out of five stars. Not bad for a technology that’s so innovative and enjoyable for people ages six to sixty. I highly recommend this product for everyone. Now I have the perfect gift this Christmas.
